Russia Extends Legalization Deadline for Undocumented Foreigners to September 10

Russian authorities have extended the deadline for undocumented foreigners to legalize their stay in the country to September 10. The announcement was made on the official website of Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Previously, foreign nationals residing illegally in Russia were required to regularize their status by April 30, under a decree issued by President Vladimir Putin. The extension was revealed during a meeting between Kyrgyz Ambassador to Russia Kubanychbek Bokontaev and Igor Maslov, head of the Presidential Directorate for Interregional and Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries.

Kyrgyzstan had earlier requested that Russia consider extending the deadline of the decree.

The two officials also discussed the recent mass detention of Kyrgyz migrants at a public bathhouse in Moscow. Bokontaev urged the Russian side to approach the matter with objectivity and fairness.

The presidential decree, published on December 30 of last year, required foreign nationals to either legalize their stay or leave the country by April 30. It applies to individuals listed in the so-called «controlled persons registry,» which includes some 670,000 migrants. Those on the list are subject to deportation and are barred from registering businesses or property in Russia.
