Allegations of abuse and overreach by representatives of Kyrgyzstan’s State National Security Committee (GKNB) will be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible will be held accountable. President Sadyr Japarov said this in an interview with the Kabar news agency.

“We do not have a concept of ‘covering up’ for those who commit illegal acts, no matter who they are. In serving the people, the state places the law above all else. This principle has applied even when it concerned our close relatives and loved ones,” Japarov said, responding to a question about accusations on social media that some GKNB officers used the name of former security chief Kamchybek Tashiev as cover while carrying out illegal acts for personal gain.

“If facts are uncovered showing that certain representatives of the security services or other state bodies went beyond the law and exceeded their authority, they will certainly be investigated and held accountable. We are all equal before the law,” the president stressed.

Speaking about the future of the GKNB, Japarov said the committee had fully carried out its assigned mission and in some areas had even exceeded it. However, he noted, the state is a living organism that must constantly develop and change.

“If yesterday national security faced one set of challenges, today it faces completely different ones,” Japarov said.

Taking these realities into account, a substantive reform will be carried out in the GKNB to meet modern threats and global changes. Japarov did not specify details of the planned structural and functional changes.

Concluding his remarks on the work of the security agencies, the president assured that the fight against corruption and crime will never stop and that these phenomena must be eradicated in Kyrgyzstan.

ℹ️ On February 10, Sadyr Japarov dismissed Kamchybek Tashiev as head of the State National Security Committee. Major General Zhumgalbek Shabdanbekov was appointed acting chairman. At the same time, the president removed the Border Service from the GKNB and ordered the creation of a State Protection Service that will report directly to the head of state.
