Uzbek Politician Akmal Saidov Elected to Russian Academy of Sciences

Akmal Saidov, a representative of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan and First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (parliament), has been elected a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

Saidov was elected by the RAS General Assembly in the field of social sciences.

A Doctor of Law and professor, Saidov also serves as Director of Uzbekistan’s National Human Rights Center. In 2024, he was elected to the UN Human Rights Committee, becoming not only the first representative of Uzbekistan but also of all Central Asia to serve on the body. He received the highest number of votes among 17 candidates in the election held in New York.

Saidov also chairs the editorial board of the project Cultural Heritage of Uzbekistan in the World’s Collections, part of the World Society for the Study, Preservation, and Popularization of Uzbekistan’s Cultural Heritage (WOSCU).
